About the event
Tuxedo Junction was established in 1989 by two remarkable individuals, Pete Jacobs, a talented trumpet player, and Will Tayler, an accomplished drummer. Both were veterans of World War II and brought with them a wealth of life experience and musical talent. They originally formed an 8-piece Dixieland jazz band in the cozy basement of the senior citizens center located in Madison, CT. This humble beginning was marked by a sense of community and camaraderie, as they played music that resonated with the spirit of the era, drawing in fellow musicians and music lovers alike. Shortly thereafter, Pat Todd joined the ensemble, contributing his skills on the piano, which further enriched the band's sound and dynamic.
As the band began to gain momentum and popularity, it quickly evolved beyond its original Dixieland roots into a more expansive full swing band. Under Pete's vision, big band arrangements were incorporated, allowing for a richer and more diverse musical experience. The ensemble grew as musicians from various backgrounds joined the ranks, including high school students eager to learn and retired music teachers who had dedicated their lives to the art of music. This eclectic mix of talent not only filled out the sections of the band but also fostered a vibrant atmosphere of collaboration and creativity. Tuxedo Junction briefly relocated its practice sessions to the Westbrook Elks, a move that provided a new space for rehearsals and community engagement.
In 1997, Paul James, a pivotal figure in the band, proposed Bill’s Seafood restaurant in Westbrook, CT, as a fantastic venue to showcase their lively swing music. This decision proved to be transformative; after more than two decades of performing on Monday nights at Bill’s, the band initially found themselves outnumbering the patrons and staff. However, as their reputation grew, they successfully transformed the restaurant into the most popular destination on the Shoreline for Monday night entertainment, creating an inviting atmosphere filled with music and dance. Eventually, the band expanded their performance venues to outdoor locations such as Town Greens and Overlook Farm in Killingworth, CT, further broadening their reach and appeal.
Currently, Tuxedo Junction holds its performances every Monday night at the Guilford VFW on Mill Road in Guilford, CT. This venue has become a beloved gathering place for swing music enthusiasts and dancers alike.

Val Rogers, a gifted vocalist from Willington, CT, often joins the band on the first Monday of each month, adding her unique flair to the performances.
The Mondays at the VFW have rapidly gained popularity, establishing themselves as the go-to hot spot for dancing and enjoying swing music along the Shoreline. The public is warmly invited to attend these lively evenings, where they can dance and listen to the music free of charge. Additionally, Tuxedo Junction is available for hire, bringing their energetic performances to both public and private events throughout Connecticut, ensuring that their music can be enjoyed by a wider audience.
The repertoire of Tuxedo Junction is a delightful blend of original big band arrangements that span from the 1930s to the present day. Their performances include timeless pieces from legendary composers and artists such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Sy Zentner, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others. The band focuses on providing danceable tunes that cater to a variety of tastes, including swing, waltz, foxtrot, two-step, Latin rhythms, and even some rock classics. This diverse range of music ensures that there is something for everyone, making their performances not only enjoyable but also engaging for audiences of all ages.
After an impressive milestone of more than 1,001 performances, Tuxedo Junction has truly become a remarkable musical success story. The band now consists of eighteen passionate musicians, both men and women, representing a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Together, they continue to uphold and celebrate the great jazz tradition, creating a welcoming environment for visiting jazz musicians who are encouraged to join in and share their talents. This spirit of collaboration and community has solidified Tuxedo Junction's reputation as a cherished institution in the local music scene, fostering a love for jazz and swing music that transcends generations.
